Tommy Robinson was presented with the national BTEC award by TV Presenter Steph McGovern and Colette Burgess, BTEC Teacher/ Tutor of the Year 2017 at the awards ceremony at Central Hall Westminster in London.
The accolade of BTEC Teacher/Tutor of the Year 2018 was given to Tommy Robinson by Pearson, an awarding body for vocational and academic qualifications, on Thursday, July 5.
Despite such a fantastic national achievement, Tommy Robinson remains humble, crediting his pupils for his successes as a teacher.
Asked what the award means to him, Mr Robinson said, “As a teacher you come in and do your job and do things you do every single day, but you don’t think you’re any better than anyone else.”
Mr Robinson said winning the award is also a reflection of his students and he said without their ‘exceptionally hard work’ he would just be ‘a man in a suit talking to children’.
Mr. Robinson works at the John Madejski Academy in Whitley, and it was the school and his fiancé that put him up for the award after all the efforts he has put in, and the heights he has enabled the children he teaches to reach.
As the co-ordinator of creative and performing arts at the school, he has overseen 38 productions this year, with his students winning many awards including Reading Youth Choir of the Year, Overall Reading Choir of the Year and Under 25s Talent of the Year at the Reading culture awards.
Being passionate about the arts, he expressed his delight at the award going to an arts teacher, “More than anything else I was happy that it was an arts teacher who won because the arts have taken a bit of a hit.”
“Nationally it recognised that the performing arts are important and it’s a proper qualification and profession.”
“doing what we do do lifts the pride of the area…things like this make them feel great about where they are.”
Here at Lantern, we commend Mr. Robinson for all that he has given to the school and his commitment really does reflect the spirit of the area that we live. For him to recieve such an impressive accolade shows the talent in Maidenhead and also the fantastic quality of education that the area boasts.
